She Fought Childhood Apraxia of Speech and Won

Ronda Rousey's first big win as a fighter was against Childhood Apraxia of Speech Children born with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) are in a constant fight to say the words that they want to say. Ironically, Ronda Rousey, who happens to be a UFC World Champion mixed-martial-arts fighter, fought this rare speech disability. She overcame the disorder that made her shy and feel stupid as a child. She is now an inspiration to all children with CAS every time she steps into the spotlight as an athlete and model and every time she speaks with confidence during interviews and acting roles. [...]

More Insurance Plans Will Cover Applied Behavior Analysis For Autism

Insurance plans for fed workers can't exclude Applied Behavior Analysis therapy anymore. All health care plans that cover federal government workers, will be mandated to cover Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has been encouraging, but not mandating, insurance companies to provide coverage to federal employees to cover ABA therapy since 2013. Currently, only 23 states offer federal worker health insurance plans that cover Applier Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for autism. That's going to change because the overwhelming evidence shows ABA is both clinically appropriate, medically necessary and quite effective. The results of ABA could not be [...]

Autism Social Stories: Preparing for an Airplane Trip

The power of social stories taking flight We use social stories with great visuals to teach children with autism, anxiety and/or sequencing issues. You might find them helpful too. One of my kiddos with autism is going on his first airplane trip for spring break. His mother is very excited about the trip and somewhat terrified too. Regardless, she's not going to deny her child a great experience. She's going to prepare for the worst and expect the best. The child does well on a set schedule and routine. He's prone to melt downs when he gets off schedule or [...]

Signing Santa listens with his ears, eyes and heart

Communication is a gift that we share with each other. Spoken words are helpful, but are certainly not required. Signing works well too. Furthermore, a look, and there are an infinite number of looks, convey both simple and complex messages. A smile, a cry, a cough, a yawn, an exhale, a gasp, a gesture, a laugh, a whimper, a sniffle, and even a snore all speak loudly too. We just need to listen with our ears, our eyes and our hearts. There is no one better at doing just that than Santa. The other day, I saw a picture of myself sitting [...]

Sesame Street Character Julia has Autism.

Children with autism are welcome on Sesame Street Sesame Street has been working with Autism Speaks and Autism Self Advocacy to build awareness of autism with the introduction of a new character called Julia. Julia is the first Sesame Street character with autism. For 45 years, Sesame Street has been teaching kids about the people and places around them. To further complicate the issue, autism [...]

A Test for Autism Has Been Right In Front of Our Eyes.

Has a simple and accurate diagnostic test for autism been right in front of our eyes the whole time? A simple penlight pupil test that is commonly used by pediatricians may be able to diagnose autism disorder according to a Washington State University study. This simple test may lead to a physiological measurement of autism. Currently, autism is diagnosed with a somewhat subjective behavioral evaluation which cannot be confirmed until the child is 2 to 3 years old. Valuable early intervention time is lost waiting for this type of diagnosis which is why an ordinary penlight pupil test for autism [...]

Broadway Star Angered After Child with Autism Interrupts Show

Understanding Autism During a recent broadway show of “The King and I” a young boy with autism started screaming loudly. The interruption happened during a particularly intense yet quiet scene in the second act. Members of the audience were angered and insisted that the mother and child be removed even though the mother was already trying desperately to take her defiant child away. The horrified mother pleaded with her son to calm down and to let go of the railing that her son held on to so tightly. Broadway star, Kelvin Moon Loh, was absolutely appalled. Not at the mother and [...]

The Beach or Speech Therapy in the Summer?

Summer, Time to go to Speech Therapy If you were to ask a child if he or she would like to go to the beach or speech therapy in the summer, speech therapy would not be the choice. Well, this is a post about a child named Bobby* who was not given a choice. His parents, Brenda and Bob, elected to bring him to speech therapy 2 times a week in this summer. Bobby, who gets speech therapy through his school, took the last summer off and he regressed. His parents did not want to make that mistake again so they brought [...]

Autism Service Dogs to the Rescue

Research shows the benefits of autism service dogs Many kids with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) contend with behavioral issues, have communication deficits and / or struggle with forming social relationships. These issues make it hard for them to connect to others in the community. These issues are magnified because the community at large does not understand autism fully. As a result, many children with autism retreat further when they get ignored, made fun of or worse yet bullied. Humans at wonderful organizations, like Autism Speaks, are trying to educate the community to build tolerance and understanding. And the super human parents of children [...]
