Five Year Old Uses American Sign Language to Steal the Show.

American Sign Language Sings Loudly at a Holiday Concert Claire Koch entertains with American Sign Language The first language of a five year old girl named Claire Koch is American Sign Language. She is not deaf, but her two parents are. During her school holiday concert, Claire surprised her parents and the entire assembly by signing the songs. She absolutely stole the show. The Kidmunication Point At Kidmunicate, we say that communication is a gift, some are born with it and some need a lift. As a pediatric speech pathology clinic, we typically see parents lifting the spirits [...]

A Super Mom Rachel Coleman and Sign Language

This Mom Learned American Sign Language for Her Daughter It's Mother's Day, so I wanted to highlight a super mom named Rachel Coleman. Rachel helped her daughter Leah, who is deaf, to communicate with confidence. After Rachel learned about Leah's disability, she quickly jumped into action because she knew that early intervention was so important to long term success. Rachel learned sign language and with the help of a speech therapist taught it to her daughter. Sign language opened up the world Leah's world started to open up. There were a few kids in Leah's class who knew a few signs [...]

I have dreamt of having my own clinic so that I can help more kids. I am not alone either. I have had numerous conversations with other private practice SLPs over the years who have or had the same dream. The [...]

Using iPads in Speech Therapy

The iPad Apps for Speech Therapy: A powerful tool for Pediatric Speech Pathologists The iPad has been a great addition to my bag of tricks during pediatric speech therapy sessions. I use the iPad for a variety of purposes such as increasing spontaneous length of utterance, improving syntax (First phrases, First Sentences, Super Duper apps), targeting articulation (Articpix), receptive language (Hamaguchiapps Fun with directions) expressive language (Toca Boca apps), receptive/expressive vocabulary (Kindergarten.com apps), auditory processing skills (Picture the Sentence), answering questions (Wh questions) and increasing vocalizations/verbalizations (Talking Apps such as Furry Friends). I also use the iPad for many students [...]

Finding a Location for a Speech Clinic

Starting a speech pathology private practice I went to my home town, Westfield NJ, yesterday to visit an entrepreneurial SLP who started a very successful practice there called Pediatric Speech-Language Service LLC. The owner was so nice and helpful. I felt like I was talking to family. She gave us some great advice. More importantly, she gave me the final bit of confidence that I needed to move forward and start my own clinic. The next, step is to find a location. My business partners (my brother and my sister) helped me scout out locations on Thanksgiving week. My [...]
